Bridal Gown Tips for Chicago Wedding Dresses

Wedding gownFinding a wedding dress may be as stressful and time consuming as planning the entire wedding. Some brides have been dreaming about their wedding dresses for as long as they can remember. Finding the perfect fit for your dress may seem overwhelming, but a flattering gown shape will not only enhance your figure, but will also make you feel comfortable and beautiful on your special day.

There are several different cuts and styles available to brides today. It’s a good idea to have a firm grasp on the different terms in order to avoid miscommunication between you and your salesperson.

The basic shapes are:

  • Ball Gown or Princess Gown - This is the most traditional style. The top of the dress is typically fitted at the bust and waist and leads into a very full-bodied skirt.
  • Empire-Waisted Gown - The defining characteristic of the Empire Gown is the high waistline, usually right below the bust.
  • Princess Seam or A-Line Gown - This gown features seams going down either side of the dress and a slightly flared skirt, creating a beautiful silhouette.
  • Sheath - The sheath gown follows the body closely capturing the slimness of the figure.

Once you know the shapes it is important to analyze your figure and find the best one that works for you.

Hour Glass

If you have a classic hourglass shape (fuller chest, thin waist, and bigger hips) it is a good idea to stay away from Ball Gowns and any dress with a fuller skirt and a t-shirt neckline as it may make you look disproportionate.  A-Line dresses with off-the-shoulder or sweetheart necklines are very good choices.

Short Waist

If you have a shorter torso (distance between your ribs to your hips) you will want to find a dress that will elongate your body. To create a longer torso, short-waisted brides may also try a princess-lined gown. The vertical lines will create a longer looking figure.

Petite

If you are a smaller bride, don’t over do it with a big dress. Make sure you keep it simple so the dress is not overpowering you. Most shapes will work, but A-Line and princess seams will be the most flattering.

Tall and Slender

Sheath dresses tend to be the most appropriate for taller brides. This dress hugs very closely to the body showing off the thinness and tallness of the body.

Fuller Figure

Too many times, fuller figured brides try to hide their figure under a sack dress. A ball gown or princess gown that is fitted at the bust and waist can provide a much more flattering look. And, as always, A-Line dresses will also be appropriate.

Be willing to change some of your ideas in order to accommodate your figure. Finding a dress that compliments your body is important for you to feel comfortable and beautiful on your wedding day.

Bridal gownWhile shopping for a wedding dress, try to be aware of styles. Like everything else in fashion, wedding dresses and accessories follow definite trends. Contrary to the embroidered corsets and ruffled skirts of previous seasons, a simple, elegant style is now the trend. Floor length gowns and intricate beadwork replace the heaviness of embroidered satin. Clean lines enhance the body’s shape and classically frame the bride. Flowing trains and veils still remain popular.

Planning the right accessories is as important as the dress. Too much clutter can take the focus away from you. If your dress is intricate, go with a simpler veil. If your dress has less detail, dress it up with an elaborate veil or jewelry. If you still need to add “something old”, vintage-inspired brooches and hair clips make a strong appearance. Instead of diamond studs, consider vintage drop earrings. Learning to spot what’s hot gives you more ways to create an everlasting image.

Which white to choose may seem like a simple task, but there are more shades than you would expect. If you have a fair complexion, you may want to avoid a stark white and possibly choose something a little warmer. Diamond white is every bit as classic as standard white, but is a little softer on the eyes. If you have a rosier complexion, you might want to try a creamier white, which will compliment your pinkish hue. Brides with darker complexions have their pick of the litter, since just about any white will flatter their skin tones.

Remember to give yourself enough time to shop and be patient. There are no rules, so find the best dress that works for you. Try not to stress yourself out too much, and enjoy the memories you are creating with your closest friends and family.
