Jewelry for your Wedding Day
June 23, 2006
Finding the right type of jewelry to wear on your wedding day is a difficult task. Of course, every bride wants to something beautiful to wear to complement their Chicago wedding dress but not something that will overpower their entire wedding ensemble.
Many jewelers in the Chicagoland area are very skilled in helping brides choose wedding jewelry that will accent their look for the special day. A good Chicago jeweler will ask you to describe your wedding dress and other wedding accessories before making a recommendation. They will also take into account the type and style of your wedding.
It takes time to pick the right wedding jewelry. Here are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for your jewelry.
1) Choose a maximum of 5 jewelry stores to find your wedding jewelry. If you try to visit over 5 stores, you might get overwhelmed by so many choices and prices. Ask your friends and family members about Chicago jewelry stores that they trust and start compiling your list with that information.
2) Give the jewelry store salesperson a range of the amount of money you would like to spend on your wedding jewelry, and stick to it. Remember, you will look beautiful no matter what, and your jewelry will simply augment that beauty.
3) If you are specifically shopping for diamonds, do your homework about the 4 Cs - cut, clarity, color and carat. Chances are that you probably are well-versed in this area, but in case you are not, just do a search online for this information. It will help you choose the right jewelry for the appropriate amount of money.
4) Do not buy anything if you are hungry, angry or tired. That’s the perfect time to make a bad decision. If you’ve been walking around the mall for hours and have visited 8 jewelry stores on one day, then wait a few days to process the information. If they tell you that your jewelry may not be available after that day, then move on. That’s just a high-pressure sales tactic to make you buy on the spot.
5) Take a friend, family member or your fiance’ with you. Try not to make a big-ticket purchase by yourself because your emotions are tied into your wedding planning. It’s hard to see clearly when one’s emotions are involved.
Beware of Chicago jewelers that just want to sell you the most expensive items in their store. They might give you lines like “Platinum & diamonds go well together” or “Your diamond earrings need to be at least one carat for your wedding day.” That’s a bunch of hogwash. I know plenty of brides that choose something simple for the wedding day and they look fabulous.
Just as I learned as a junior Girl Scout, all that glitters is not gold. Take your time and choose something that works for you.
