Dealing with Engagement Ring Envy

I was talking to a bride-to-be the other day about Ring Envy.  You know what it is.  Let’s say you love your engagement ring to pieces.  The emotional value could never match the actual value of this ring that your betrothed gave to you on one of the best days of your life.

Then, suddenly you come across another newly engaged bride-to-be who is absolutely gushing about her wedding plans, when your eyes are momentarily blinded by the light coming from her huge rock.  You don’t mean to look, but you can’t help yourself.  Next thing you know, you’re planning her demise and criticizing every single part of her in your mind, simply because she has a larger diamond.  That, my friend, is Ring Envy.

Ring Envy is a cunning and baffling state of mind that can overcome the sweetest bride.  Before you got engaged, maybe you didn’t really care about diamonds at all.  Sure, they’re pretty, but that wasn’t really important.  The love you have for each other is the greatest gift in the world.

But, when you’re faced with a 3-carat diamond ring-wearing bride, then all bets are off.  Maybe you start to think that your fiance doesn’t love you as much as this other woman’s partner.  If he did, then you would be the one with the lovely rock, right?

The size of a diamond does not signify the amount of love your fiance has for you.  It’s just a ring and some men choose to get something they can really afford instead buying something that they’ll have to pay off for the next ten years.

Some brides feel less than when they come across a bride wearing a larger diamond ring.  I struggled with Ring Envy for a little while, but it doesn’t even come up for me now.  It really doesn’t matter.  The only thing that matters is that my husband and I are partners in every sense of the word and we’re building a life together.

Diamonds are beautiful, but don’t believe the hype.  They’ll be around for a long time and you’ll have plenty of time to score that big diamond ring sometime in the not-so-distant future.

Take care!
