Losing Weight before the Wedding
July 25, 2005
Last Friday, I caught part of the Dateline special called The Bridal Diet Challenge about brides who wanted to lose weight before their wedding. Nothing special about that, right? Well, some of these brides wanted to lose as much as 40 pounds in 6 months. That might be a realistic goal to some people, but is it a manageable one?
Don’t get me wrong...I completely understand the desire to lose weight before the wedding. I lost about 22 pounds before my wedding in 10 months by using a well-known weight loss plan that worked for me. I considered it a lifestyle change that felt completely manageable. I fell just short of my weight loss goal, but I was happy with the results of the program.
As I watched this Dateline special, I kept thinking about the amount of pressure these women might feel. They were all juggling tasks and appointments with wedding vendors while altering their food and caloric intake by large amounts. Some of them talked about ordering wedding gowns that were 3 sizes too small to force themselves to lose the weight. As one bride said, “I am not walking down the aisle looking like a balloon”.
I think it’s good to adopt a healthier lifestyle. I just think that the added pressure to lose a large amount of weight before the big day can block us from preparing for marriage.
I hope the brides will appreciate any weight loss goal that they were able to reach before the wedding.
Have a great day!
