Marriage & Debt
August 8, 2005
Debt is not the worst thing in the world. That’s right, I said it. There is life after debt.
A lot of us enter the workforce thousands of dollars in debt due to our student loan financed education. Others spend wildly using credit cards and other forms of unsecured debt to furnish our first apartments and condos. When it’s time to marry another person, it’s important to disclose your financial history before you take that long walk down the aisle.
Shame around debt can paralyze a person from living his or her life to the fullest. I knew a woman who was petrified of revealing her financial past to her boyfriend. She took the leap a while ago and now they are happily engaged. They decided to work on their financial obligations together.
We all make mistakes and one person’s debt does not have to end the relationship. It is important that both parties commit to living and spending wisely in the present and address any mistakes that may have happened in the past.
Marriage is a partnership of two people working together. Successful partnerships thrive when there is rigorous honesty and full disclosure by both parties involved.
Have a great one!
