Saying No to Wedding Debt

So many couples plunge themselves into debt to create that perfect wedding.  There is absolutely no need to go into debt to have an amazing wedding that reflects your personality and vision.  But, for some reason, couples go into debt from the wedding ring all the way to the honeymoon creating stress and unhappiness along the way.

An article in Kiplinger talks about different purchases for which most people go into debt.  The section about wedding debt is small but I think it’s very important.  The value of the purchases and services that you buy when planning your wedding will not appreciate, therefore it’s not a good idea to create wedding debt.  Going into debt for graduate school or purchasing a home will appreciate in time, therefore it’s considered good debt.

The problem is that many people throw caution to the wind when they get engaged and they want to top the Joneses or they just want to splurge because they deserve it.  When they’re fighting over money and debt after their glorious wedding, they might lament that choice to create thousands of dollars worth of debt for only one day of their lives.  The day is gone, but the debt remains.

Our economy is not doing very well right now and it’s important for couples to remember that the most important thing is to celebrate their love in front of family and friends.  No, you don’t need to serve lobster and filet mignon to your guests.  They’ll love you just the same if they dine on chicken and vegetables.  We’re all in this together and there’s no need to impress anyone.

Wedding magazines tend to encourage the spending of money to create this “perfect” wedding.  Remember, advertisements make up the bulk of most wedding magazines, which is why they weigh about ten pounds each.  Although they won’t admit it, editors would be remiss if they didn’t encourage outrageous spending because their bread and butter is made up of local advertisers.

Chicago Social Brides just came out with the “Decadence” issue filled with unbelievably expensive dresses, jewelry and lavish affairs that only the wealthy can afford.  Well, not many of us can indulge in such decadent purchases.  So, instead of chasing after the Joneses, the Worthingtons or the Schuberts, try to create a beautiful wedding that fits comfortably within your budget.  You’ll create a happier marriage as a result.

Have a great one!
