The Bigamist of London
August 11, 2005
I just read an article in the Washington Post about an Englishman named Melvyn Reed who was recently busted for bigamy. While he lay recovering from triple bypass surgery, all three of his wives showed up to the hospital to support their loving husband. They quickly figured out that they were all married to the same man.
Apparently he married the first wife in 1966, the second wife in 1998 and the third wife in 2003. Wasn’t one wedding enough?
Actually, the real question is, why didn’t he file for divorce from each woman? Was he just lazy or did he feel guilty about abandoning them? Was he too chicken to face each wife after walking away from the marriage? Why did he deny these women closure?
He plead guilty to bigamy and ended up receiving four months of prison time and a fine of 70 pounds. Wow. It’s amazing to think that years of deception can result in such a light sentence.
Anyway, have a great one!
