Wedding Cake Disaster -- Brides Beware

This is an unbelievable story that I found at the Chicago Tribune.  Apparently, Linda and Roman Salazar in the Chicagoland area was having their wedding reception at a popular reception site, but during the reception their five-tier double devil’s food pound cake fell right on the floor in front of everyone when the staff tried to move it to a different location in the room.

According to the article, the bride was stunned, started crying, but regained composure quickly.  The ballroom’s director approached her with several options to solve the problem, which actually included serving parts of the cake that didn’t actually touch the floor.  Are you kidding me?  Another option was for the staff to go buy pastries at Jewel to serve to their guests.  She, of course, chose the latter option because she didn’t want her guests served any part of a cake that landed on the floor.

Well, when she spotted a piece of her wedding cake on a table, she questioned the ballroom director who said that the owner authorized serving the cake!!  What???  Are you kidding me?  In this day and age and in this bad economy, the owner actually authorized that against her wishes??  How could an owner of an eating establishment authorize something so unsanitary?

This is unbelievable to me.  That owner should have come and apologized to the couple personally after that debacle.  He should have given them a complete refund and offered them some type of credit on top of that.  I cannot believe that some business owner would actually have the gall to override the couple’s wishes when they were the victims in this whole fiasco.  They had to leave for their honeymoon with this mess completely unresolved.

The Problem Solver from the Chicago Tribune, Jon Yates, tried to reach the owner of the reception site four times to get his side of what happened and to reach a resolution for the couple.  The owner did not return any of his messages.

Finally, the owner left a voice message for the couple when he found out that the story was going to run in the Chicago Tribune.  He asked to set up a time to talk and to delay the column with the Tribune.  The bride returned the message and never heard from him again.

Brides beware!!!  You have rights.  This couple paid for a cake that should have been served to their guests WITHOUT TOUCHING THE FLOOR!  I might get some flack for blogging about this, but I don’t care.  Some things you just don’t do.  I’m sick of vendors taking advantage of couples.  Now is the time to start acting more responsibly.

I will note that I have not talked to the owner of this establishment.  I am completely referring to this article in the Chicago Tribune, a trusted source for news.
