Wedding Chicago: Living in the Present
July 13, 2005
Good morning, everyone!
Before my wedding, several married friends suggested that I let go of fear and enjoy my wedding as much as possible. The day is fleeting and it would be over sooner than I thought. That was some of the best advice I could have ever received.
Perfectionism is a lovely character trait that can block couples from living in the present. One vendor shared with me that he recently worked on a wedding with an unhappy bride. Before the wedding she yelled at her bridal party to pick up the pace so that they wouldn’t be late for the church. After the ceremony she complained to her family and friends about the flowers and the DJ her husband hired for the wedding reception. How can she really enjoy the day if she worried about every little thing?
The moment really is fleeting. During the ceremony, I remember kneeling at the altar and focusing on the readings to help ground me into the present. I was entering a lifelong commitment with a wonderful man. That’s all that really mattered.
The reception went by a little quicker than I had imagined, but I remember everything that happened that day. Luckily, our photographer picked up all the little moments that we missed as we celebrated with family and friends.
Enjoy your wedding.
