Wedding News: Wedding Dresses Support an Orphanage in Uganda
April 26, 2007
I just came across a story from Recordonline.com that talks about an American couple’s effort in raising money to support an orphanage in Uganda.
Karla Greenleaf, and her husband Scott, are in the process of building an orphanage in Uganda to help the children in the village whose parents have died as a result of AIDS. The proliferation of the disease continues to affect adults and children alike in the Rakai district of Uganda and leaves many children under the age of 16 to fend for themselves.
After attending a number of weddings in Uganda, Karla Greenleaf came up with the idea of renting wedding dresses to Ugandan women who traditionally wear up to five wedding dresses during their celebration. A number of Ugandan brides purchase their wedding dresses in the U.S. and then rent out the dresses to engaged friends and family members after the wedding.
Members of Grace Fellowship Church in Port Jervis, New York, found out about the orphanage and have thus far collected 27 wedding dresses to help the children of this village. Ms. Greenleaf hopes to have the orphanage up and running sometime this year. With donations and support, the Greenleafs have purchased 10 acres of land in the district and have completed Phase One of the Rakai Children’s Village, which includes a water tower and a church.
For those of you who want to put your wedding dress to good use after the wedding, go to www.hopeforuganda.com to find out more information about Ms. Greenleaf, her family and the members of this village.
Take care!
