What's in a Name?

So, what’s your name going to be when you get married?  Hmmmmm....  Doesn’t that sound a little bit like “So, what are you going to be when you grow up?”

Alright, maybe I’m being a little sensitive, but brides get asked this question everyday.  A lot of us are getting married later in life, so it’s an important question that we first have to ask ourselves.  Do I want to change my name after all these years?  Is it necessary?

It took me over a year after the wedding to make a decision on this issue.  Professionally, I was known by my maiden name, Alison Lonesome, which happens to be a very unique name.  Most people remembered me by last name so I didn’t want to give up my professional identity.

I decided to take on my husband’s last name as a symbol of new beginnings.  I kept my maiden name and changed it to my middle name.  I chose not to hyphenate because I wanted the strength of both names to stand on their own.

It’s a very personal decision.  Take your time to make the choice that’s right for you.  In spite of what your mother might say, there is no right answer to this question.

If you decide to change your name, remember that nothing is set in stone.  You could always decide to change it right back.

Have a great day!
