Chicago Bachelorette Party & The Color Purple
September 18, 2007
I had the opportunity to see a performance of The Color Purple a few weeks ago with my mom, her friend & my husband. I have to say that it was a very touching experience for all of us and helped us to appreciate our own families that much more. This play is a great way to enjoy Chicago with your family before your wedding.
We all know the story of The Color Purple. I read the book when I was a kid and saw the movie a few years after that. I didn’t think that the play would have such an impact on me until I participated in this special event.
The acting, as a whole, is tremendous. The lead actor who plays Celie is transcendent in her performance. She is truly in the moment and living the part on stage throughout the duration of the play. I teach acting at a college level downtown, so acting is always very important to me.
I have to admit that I was disappointed in the Cadillac Theatre itself and the audience. The show started promptly at 7:30PM and the ushers were still seating people as late as 8:10PM. They ushered some ticket holders all the way down to the second row in the main floor, which was very disruptive to me as an audience member. Most professional theatres, such as the Goodman or Steppenwolf, will either seat you in the back row until intermission or will prevent you from entering the theatre altogether until intermission.
Also, the audience frequently yelled out their own dialogue during quiet performances. It takes an incredible amount of concentration to perform in live theatre. This would have taken me out of the moment had I been onstage during these disruptions. In spite of this, we still had an amazing time.
The show is scheduled to end on September 30th, so if you can get tickets, it would have fun pre-wedding celebration before your special day. Tickets are still available, but they are not cheap. If you’re hard-pressed to find a gift for your bridesmaids or a thank-you gift for your parents, consider treating them to a showing of this play. Afterwards, you can enjoy the rest of the night with your friends and family over appetizers and drinks at the Hotel Allegro next door.
